China leads international team to develop new programmable optical quantum chips

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) A new programmable optical quantum computing chip has been developed by a Chinese-led international team, which can solve a variety of graph theory problems using quantum algorithms, and is expected to be used in data search, pattern recognition and other fields, according to a paper published Wednesday in Science Advances.

National university of defense technology, academy of military sciences, sun yat-sen university, Beijing institute of China’s scientific research institutions, such as quantum information science researchers and multinational cooperation of scientific research personnel, and USES the silicon-based integrated optics technology, designed and developed the new programmable light quantum computing chips, can achieve fully programmable dynamic simulation of multiparticle quantum walk.

Paper first author and corresponding author, academy of military sciences, national defense science and technology innovation, a researcher at xiao has just said, the chips for the first time to stroll quantum evolutionary time, Hamiltonian, particle all the gay and the exchange of characteristic elements such as fully programmable control, and support to achieve a variety of quantum algorithm based on quantum walk model.

According to Cai Xinlun, a professor at Sun Yat-sen University and the co-corresponding author of the paper, the optical quantum chip technology integrates a large number of optical quantum devices on a single chip by micro-nano processing technology, which is an effective way to realize the large-scale application of optical quantum computer. Wu Junjie, co-corresponding author of the paper and a researcher at the National University of Defense Technology, said that the computing power of the chip will grow rapidly with the increase of the chip size and the number of photons, but a series of technical challenges still need to be overcome to realize the real practical quantum computing.
