Independent monitors are analyzing data from studies of 32,000 people in the United States to determine whether the vaccine is safe and effective.

If the analysis confirms that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective, the FDA estimates it will take about three weeks to analyze the trial data and then an expert advisory panel will meet and vote on whether to recommend authorization, said Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

Many countries, including France and Germany, have suspended use of the AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of serious side effects such as bleeding and blood clots.

When asked about the issue, Collins said he had not seen the data personally, but he was “fairly confident” of European regulators’ statements that the problems were probably accidental and not related to the vaccine. Collins said that because of the large number of people vaccinated, it is inevitable that some people will develop blood clots while getting the vaccine.
