China’s CDC chief responds exclusively to ‘confirmed case in Xi ‘an still infected after vaccination’

On the early morning of March 18, Liu, an examiner in the closed and isolated ward of Xi ‘an No. 8 Hospital, was diagnosed as a case of COVID-19. Why are medical workers still infected when they are a priority group to receive COVID-19 vaccine? On March 20, Gao Fu, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, gave three possibilities in an interview with Zhuang Shengchun, a reporter from Relativity of CCTV News.

“After the vaccine, the body produces antibodies, but the virus is infected in the respiratory tract, so the antibodies in the body may not be so good at preventing respiratory tract infections, which is a possibility. A small number of people do not respond to the new coronavirus vaccination. Since the new coronavirus vaccination has just started, the proportion of the people who do not respond has not been calculated, which is also a possibility. The third possibility is that you’ve had two shots of the inactivated vaccine and the antibody titer is not enough and you might need a third shot.”

Gao Fu pointed out that the case should not be denied because of the whole, to pay close attention to the case study. Vaccines protect populations. Scientific problems arising from individual cases should be solved with a scientific attitude. (reporter Zhuang Shengchun)
