A total of 1.03 million duty-free shopping trips were made in Hainan during the first two months of this year, with 10.55 million duty-free purchases, according to customs officials in Haikou, Hainan.
The three figures were up 319.7 per cent, 114.8 per cent and 284.6 per cent respectively from the same period last year.
On February 20, a number of duty-free shops in Hainan were closed due to the outbreak. However, with the epidemic under effective control in China, duty-free shops in Hainan saw a shopping boom during the Spring Festival holiday in February. According to the Hainan Department of Commerce, the sales of nine duty-free shops in Hainan during the seven-day Spring Festival Golden Week exceeded 1.5 billion yuan, double that of the Spring Festival holiday before the outbreak of the epidemic in 2019.
Drived by the Spring Festival consumption, duty-free shopping on the outliers of Hainan increased significantly in February compared with January. After the Spring Festival, Hainan Island duty-free sales continued hot momentum. Reporters recently saw in the Haikou Global Boutiques (Haikou) duty-free city in downtown Haikou and the duty-free shops in the city of Zhongniang Haikou, citizens and tourists wear masks to show their health code, and pass the automatic temperature meter to check before entering the store for shopping.
