The foreign trade volume of Yunnan and Mekong countries increased by 16.04 billion US dollars last year

“In 2020, under the background of the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19 epidemic, the trade between Yunnan Province and Mekong River countries will continue to grow, with the import and export volume reaching 16.04 billion US dollars, an increase of 3.7% year-on-year.” Li Malin, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, said here on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC).

The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC), a new sub-regional cooperation mechanism jointly initiated and built by China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, was officially launched on March 23, 2016. Over the years, Yunnan Province, which is close to Mekong River countries by mountains and rivers, has deepened cooperation with them in such areas as infrastructure connectivity, unimpeded trade and cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and achieved remarkable results.

At a series of activities to celebrate the fifth anniversary of LMC and a seminar on deepening LMC held on the same day, Li Marin said that Yunnan established the Yunnan Liaison Office of the Chinese Secretariat for LMC in June 2017, making Yunnan the first and only LMC liaison agency set up at the provincial level. In March 2019, the Yunnan-Cambodia Cooperation Working Group was officially established, realizing the full coverage of bilateral cooperation mechanisms between Yunnan Province and Mekong River countries.

Li said that in the past five years, in terms of infrastructure connectivity with Mekong River countries, Yunnan’s “Five Outbound” Channel in Yunnan has basically achieved high-speed development. The Vientiane – Wanrong Expressway, jointly invested by Yunnan Construction and Investment Group and the Lao government, was officially opened to traffic in December 2020. The China-Laos railway will be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2021, and the construction of China-Vietnam and China-Myanmar railway corridors is progressing. The province has opened more than 40 international routes to Mekong River countries; At the same time, the interconnection between Yunnan and Mekong countries in electricity, communication and other fields has been developing continuously.

In terms of financial financing, several institutions in Yunnan Province have signed cooperation agreements on payment and settlement and online banking of border trade with banking institutions in Mekong countries, and facilitated the implementation of a number of financial cooperation projects through multilateral and bilateral cooperation mechanisms and platforms such as China-South Asia Expo, Commodity Exhibition and Investment and Trade Fair for South and Southeast Asian Countries.

According to statistics, in 2020, the trade volume between China and the five Mekong countries reached US $322.1 billion, an increase of 66.3% over 2015. In 2019, more than 50 million visits were made between China and Mekong countries, with nearly 3,000 scheduled flights per week. Over the past five years, more than 20,000 students from the five Mekong countries have studied in China on Chinese government scholarships, and the Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education and Training Base has trained more than 40,000 migrant workers in Yunnan.
