SUEZ, Egypt, March 29 (Xinhua) Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority on 29 issued a statement that the stranded heavy cargo ship in the Suez Canal has completely moved to the normal channel and sailed away from the stranded position.
Reporters saw at the scene, the freighter hull has been floating in the river, northbound. Cargo ships honked their horns in salute, and some began to move.
The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabieh, later told Egyptian state television that traffic had resumed and the ship would be taken to nearby Great Bore Lake for further inspection, which was expected to take three days. The cause of the accident will be announced after an examination.
Rabieh said a dozen tugboats and dredgers joined the rescue operation, and eventually with the help of a high tide to lift the stranded cargo ship afloat.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later took to social media to thank all those involved in the rescue operation. (Participating reporter: Yan Jing)
