Sun Tan, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), said that in the next step, the CAAS will focus on accelerating scientific and technological innovation of agricultural products processing, promoting the rapid development of the agricultural processing industry, strengthening the rural industrial chain and promoting the optimization and upgrading of the whole industrial chain. The goal is to strive to improve the ratio of agricultural processing industry to agricultural output value from 2.4∶1 to 2.8∶1 by 2025, increase the conversion rate of agricultural processing from 67.5% to about 80%, further optimize the structure and layout of agricultural processing industry, significantly enhance the ability of independent innovation, and greatly improve the market competitiveness.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, agricultural products processing industry should promote the agglomeration of elements, and support local construction of a number of agricultural products processing industrial parks and a number of pilot areas for the integrated development of primary, secondary and tertiary industries in rural areas with projects such as one village and one product, strong towns for agricultural industry and characteristic industrial clusters as the starting point.
