Technology supports carbon neutrality at its peak
“At present, major countries and regions in the world attach great importance to the development of new energy technologies and continue to increase investment. New energy technology innovation and disruptive source technology breakthroughs have become the key means to continue to change the world’s energy landscape and start the global carbon neutral action.” On April 12, Pan Jiaofeng, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out at the release of the report “Opportunities and Challenges in New Energy Technology Research” (hereinafter referred to as the report).
The transition to low-carbon and zero-carbon energy and the reconstruction of a modern energy system are the inevitable choices for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, addressing global climate change and promoting the “green recovery” of the global economy in the post-epidemic era. As the inevitable path to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutral, new energy and renewable energy are bound to accelerate their entry into the mainstream of the energy system. This transformative energy transformation will lead to significant innovation in energy knowledge and technology system, and promote breakthroughs in basic theory, technology chain and industrial form.
The report makes a systematic analysis of 8 different new energy technology fields and 20 representative technology topics from 2000 to 2019, including solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, geothermal energy, nuclear energy, hydrogen energy, energy storage and energy Internet. It focuses on the development and research characteristics of new energy technology in China from a high level of global focus. The research competitiveness is compared with that of other major countries or regions to provide scientific basis for the R&D and deployment of new energy technologies in China and the world.
The results show that the global new energy field research is entering a period of accelerated development, solar energy, energy storage and hydrogen energy three fields have attracted worldwide attention, battery energy storage technology, solar photovoltaic technology, solar fuel technology is the most promising technical topics. In view of the trend of new energy technology research, government departments should further increase the capital investment in new energy technology research and innovation, actively guide and support the scientific research community and industry to participate in the joint innovation of new energy technology and promote the rapid breakthrough of new energy technology. From a global perspective, China can serve as an important fulcrum and link to promote cooperative research in this field.
In terms of supporting China’s energy strategy, the report points out that the breakthrough and popularization of large-scale energy storage technology is a strong support for the development of renewable energy. China should further improve the policy mechanism for promoting the development of energy storage industry, guide long-term capital investment through financial and market-oriented means, build an energy storage technology innovation and technology reserve system, strengthen research on the integrated application of new energy and energy storage, and promote large-scale energy storage technology breakthrough and commercial application.
At the same time, hydrogen energy will be an important medium to shape the future energy system and achieve energy transformation. A number of countries and regions around the world have issued strategic roadmaps for the development of hydrogen energy, elevating the hydrogen energy plan to a national strategic level. “Therefore, it is suggested that China should clarify the development direction of the hydrogen-based industry, reasonably put forward the development roadmap of the hydrogen-based industry under different scenarios, and formulate corresponding standards and norms to accelerate the development of the industrial chain of green hydrogen production, storage, transportation and application.” “Said Tan Xianchun, deputy director of the Institute of Sustainable Development Strategy at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The report also says breakthroughs in solar fuel technology and lower costs will help reduce oil dependence. China should continue to intensify the research and development of solar fuel technology, strengthen the research and development of the integrated application technology of solar power generation and construction and other infrastructure, select areas with abundant sunlight resources to carry out typical demonstration projects, and promote the industrial production process of solar technology.
More importantly, the future energy Internet will give full play to the dual advantages of “Internet +” smart energy to achieve overall and optimal energy allocation. Tan suggested that China actively promote research and development of key technologies for the energy Internet, strengthen connectivity among different energy networks, promote the construction of comprehensive energy network infrastructure, and improve the energy Internet service and management operation mechanism.
