China has started construction of the world’s largest independently developed LNG storage tank

China News Service Yancheng, June 9 (by Wang Enbo) Six of the world’s largest LNG(liquefied natural gas) storage tanks, independently developed and designed by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, were built at Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park in Jiangsu on Tuesday, marking a breakthrough in the design and construction technology of China’s super-large capacity LNG storage tanks, reaching the world’s leading level.

The project is expanded on the basis of 4 220,000 square meters LNG storage tanks of CNOOC Jiangsu LNG Phase I Project, with a total investment of 6.1 billion yuan. Construction of 6 additional 270,000 square meters super large full-capacity LNG storage tanks and their supporting facilities will start at the same time, which is the first time in China. It is planned to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2023.

Upon completion of the expansion project, the Jiangsu LNG coastal receiving station will have an annual LNG processing capacity of 6 million tons, which will make it the largest LNG storage base in China. 6 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is equivalent to 8.5 billion cubic meters of gaseous natural gas. According to the calculation of daily consumption of about 10 million cubic meters of natural gas in Jiangsu Province in 2020, the annual LNG processing capacity of the receiving station can supply gas for people’s livelihood for about 28 months, which will provide sustainable, stable and clean natural gas for the Yangtze River Delta and even East China.

At the same time, the project is of positive significance to optimize the energy structure, protect the ecological environment, and accelerate the industrial transformation of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Compared with coal, oil and other energy sources, 6 million tons of LNG can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 18.82 million tons and nitrogen oxides by 334,000 tons, which is equivalent to planting 40 million trees. The green and low-carbon effect is significant.

In recent years, CNOOC has completed the technical research on 30,000 m3, 160,000 m3, 200,000 m3 and 220,000 m3 LNG storage tanks, and carried out engineering applications in Tianjin LNG, Fujian LNG, Zhejiang LNG, Shanghai LNG, Jiangsu LNG and other projects.

It is understood that the construction of 270,000 square meters of LNG storage tank needs to break through many technical difficulties and challenges, such as large-span reticed shell structure air lift, large-span steel-concrete structure construction, mass concrete construction, group tower operation, multi-source horizontal prestressed beam penetration and so on. In the construction process, CNOOC will formulate special plans for these difficulties and make breakthroughs one by one. (after)
