The first batch of inland river ships in Guangdong will be transformed to be powered by natural gas

Guangzhou port Group co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Group Co., LTD., reached a cooperation agreement on the natural gas (LNG) power renovation project of 8 inland river ships being operated by Guangzhou Port Shipping Co., LTD., and signed the renovation project contract at the port center in Guangzhou on October 14. It marks the formal implementation of the first batch of LNG power transformation projects for inland waterway vessels in Guangdong province, and the inland waterway industry in Guangdong is stepping into a new stage of “oil to gas”.

According to the introduction, the above project plans to invest more than 40 million yuan, the 8 ships will be upgraded mainly for the operation of guangzhou port “shuttle bus” business, according to the preliminary calculation of the 8 ships after the completion of the transformation of natural gas power, compared with diesel emissions will reduce by more than 10%, the transformation project will be completed in 2022.

Guangzhou Port “shuttle bus” is a barge bridge connecting Nansha Port area with various small and medium-sized piers in the Pearl River Delta. At present, Guangzhou’s “shuttle bus” routes have covered Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Zhaoqing, Wuzhou, Qinzhou and other places. There are 72 routes connecting Jiangdahai to Guangxi and Hainan, with an annual transport volume of more than 1.9 million TEUs.

Since this year, guangdong provincial authorities have promoted the improvement of inland river shipping capacity and the green development of inland river shipping, and successively issued the Overall Division plan for Improving Inland River Shipping Capacity and Promoting the Green Development of Inland River Shipping and the Implementation Plan for improving Inland River Shipping Capacity. As the core port of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou Port has continuously invested in port environmental protection equipment and facilities, and has become one of the first four “green ports” recognized by the state.

A person in charge of Guangzhou Port Group said that the group will follow the “carbon peak, carbon neutral” deployment, to promote the use of clean energy, control pollutant emissions, intensive recycling of resources as the guidance, promote the port and shipping industry development from scale expansion to improve quality and efficiency transformation.
