Chinese research team’s new design of sustainable zinc battery can improve performance and reduce cost

Beijing, Dec. 3 (by Sun Zifa) SPRinger Nature has published a new material science research paper on nature Sustainability, a professional academic journal of Springer Nature. A Chinese research team has proposed a new battery design that can improve the performance of water zinc ion batteries and reduce their manufacturing costs.

The results show the feasibility of developing practical zn-ion batteries that are safe, high performance and sustainable, and highlight their potential to replace the traditional lithium-ion batteries used in portable electronics and electric vehicles.

Recently, more attention has been focused on water zn-ion batteries as a more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries used in portable electronics and electric vehicles because zinc is safer, more cost-effective and more environmentally compatible than lithium, the paper said. Still, there are challenges to using a stream electrolyte in a zn-ion battery — electrolyte is the liquid in the battery that allows the ions to conduct electricity, as well as the risk of uneven zinc deposition, hydrogen production and electrode corrosion, all of which can lead to rapid degradation.

To address the challenges and risks, the team of co-corresponding author Quanhong Yang, Professor at Tianjin University, China, and collaborators designed a new electrolyte composed of zinc hydrate salts. The small amount of water in the electrolyte plays a key role in overcoming the safety and technical issues associated with zinc ion batteries in water systems, while being non-flammable. They also elaborate on the cost-competitive design of the electrolyte compared to the electrolytes commonly used in zinc-ion batteries, and the demonstrated cells perform well not only at room temperature, but also in temperatures ranging from minus 30 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius.
