All venues use “green electricity” Beijing Winter Olympics “green” up

Lin Boqiang, a member of the Energy expert advisory committee of the National Energy Commission and director of the China Institute for Energy Policy Studies at Xiamen University, said “green electricity”, or green electricity, refers to electricity generated through production processes that emit zero (or nearly so) carbon dioxide. “Green electricity” mainly comes from clean energy, including solar, wind and biomass. At present, China’s “green electricity” mainly solar photovoltaic power generation and wind power generation.

On the reason why all the venues are using “green electricity”, Lin boqiang stressed that the benefits of using “green electricity” are obvious: first, to implement the concept of “sustainable development” put forward by China’s application for the Winter Olympics. With the help of the Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid Test and Demonstration Project, “green electricity” generated by solar and wind energy and other clean energy will be provided for the Beijing Winter Olympics to realize the “green Hosting of the Olympics” and show China’s image as a responsible country as a participant, contributor and leader in the construction of ecological civilization. Second, it demonstrates the confidence and attitude of the Chinese government to vigorously develop the clean energy industry. Emission reduction in the power industry is a key measure to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, while the development of clean energy industry is critical to the green development of the power industry. This is the first time in the history of the Olympic Games that all venues will be supplied with 100% green electricity, which reflects the Chinese government’s positive attitude towards the development of clean energy industry. Third, explore a new integrated path of large-scale clean energy transmission, grid connection and consumption. Taking the Hosting of the Winter Olympics as an opportunity, the flexible DC power grid can realize large-scale transmission, grid connection and consumption of clean energy, which is beneficial to accumulate valuable practical experience for building a strong, intelligent, clean and efficient large power grid.

Promoting the use of ‘green electricity’ across the country is an important starting point for strengthening ecological progress and realizing the goal of building a beautiful China. It is also an important historical responsibility for China to fulfill its responsibility as a responsible major country and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. “China has put forward the goal of carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2060, and green electricity will play a major role.”

What role does “green electricity” play in promoting clean energy development? In this regard, Lin Boqiang explained that the full use of “green electricity” in the Beijing Winter Olympics will first release the support signal from the top and play a positive role in guiding green electricity investment. Promoting the development of clean energy, such as wind power and photovoltaic, will help improve the supply and security capacity of green electricity and accelerate the building of a new power system dominated by new energy, thus helping to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality at peak carbon. Secondly, the great influence of the Winter Olympics will lead the whole society to clean and low-carbon transformation atmosphere, help to create a social low-carbon environment, encourage enterprises and residents to consume green electricity. At last, it has accumulated valuable practical experience for carrying out large-scale green electricity trading in the future. During the preparation for the Winter Olympic Games, The Beijing Power Exchange Center realized the green power supply in the whole life cycle from venues to supporting services through green power transactions, which is of milestone significance to promote the future green electricity market transactions.

Wang zhixuan stressed that the use of “green electricity” is a systematic project, which needs to play the role of “generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, use and storage” of the entire power system. It needs the support of the technical system and policy system, the joint efforts of the government and the market, and the construction of special supporting major projects. The use of “green electricity” in the Beijing Winter Olympics is a great practice for China to build a new generation system with new energy as the main body, and will provide solid and valuable experience for China’s low-carbon energy transition.
